Tarun studies in class five.
তরুণ ক্লাস ফাইভে পড়াশোনা করে।
His teacher has given a task to the students of his class.
তাঁর শিক্ষক তার ক্লাসের শিক্ষার্থীদের একটি কাজ দিয়েছেন।
He has told them to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal.
তিনি তাদের তাজমহলে একটি অনুচ্ছেদ লিখতে বলেছেন।
But Tarun does not know much about the Taj Mahal.
তবে তরুণ তাজমহল সম্পর্কে তেমন কিছু জানে না।
He only knows that it is a beautiful monument situated in Agra.

Worried, he came back home in the evening and asked his grandfather: “Grandfather, can you tell me something about Taj Mahal?”

Tarun’s grandfather was a retired teacher.
তরুনের ঠাকুরদা ছিলেন একজন অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক।
He knew a lot about this beautiful monument.
এই সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভটি সম্পর্কে তিনি অনেক কিছু জানতেন।
He smiled and said, “Ok. If you promise to be a good boy, I will tell you many things about the Taj.”
তিনি হাসলেন এবং বললেন, “ঠিক আছে। তুমি যদি ভালো ছেলে হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দাও, আমি তোমাকে তাজ সম্পর্কে অনেক কিছুই বলব।”
Tarun promised not to be naughty.
তরুণ দুষ্টু না হওয়ার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিল।
So, his grandfather began to tell him the story of Taj Mahal.
তাই, তাঁর ঠাকুরদা তাকে তাজমহলের গল্প বলতে শুরু করলেন।
“Once upon a time there lived a prince named Khurram.
“একসময় খুররাম নামে এক রাজপুত্র থাকতেন।
He was the son of Jehangir, and the grandson of Akbar the Great.
তিনি ছিলেন জাহাঙ্গীরের পুত্র এবং আকবর দ্য গ্রেট এর নাতি।
One day Khurram went to the Meena Bazaar with his friends.
একদিন খুররাম তার বন্ধুদের সাথে মীনা বাজারে গিয়েছিলেন।
There he caught a glimpse of an extremely beautiful girl who was selling silk and glass beads.
সেখানে তিনি এক অত্যন্ত সুন্দরী মেয়ের এক ঝলক পেয়েছিলেন যে রেশম ও কাচের পুঁতি বিক্রি করছিল।
The girl was Arjumand Banu Begum.
মেয়েটি ছিল আরজুমান্দ বানু বেগম।
She was born in a family of a Persian nobility.
তিনি একটি পারস্যের আভিজাত্যের পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন।
After meeting her, Khurram went back to his father and said that he wanted to marry her.
তার সাথে দেখা করার পরে খুররম তার বাবার কাছে ফিরে গিয়েছিলেন এবং বলেছিলেন যে তিনি তাকে বিয়ে করতে চান।
Khurram married Arjumand Banu Begum in 1612, five years after their first meeting.”

At this point Tarun stopped his grandfather : “But, grandfather, I don’t want to hear the story of prince Khurram. I want to know about the Taj Mahal.”

“All right” said Tarun.
“ঠিক আছে” তরুন বলল।
His grandfather continued with the story.
তাঁর দাদা গল্পটি বলা চালিয়ে যান।
“Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan. He became the emperor in the year 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was later renamed as Mumtaz Mahal.”
“পরে যুবরাজ খুররম শাহজাহান নামে পরিচিত হন। তিনি ১৬২৮ সালে সম্রাট হন। আরজুমান্দ বানু বেগমের পরে নামকরণ করা হয় মমতাজ মহল।”
“But what does the name Mumtaz Mahal mean?” asked Tarun.
“তবে মমতাজ মহল নামের অর্থ কী?” তরুনকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
“It means the brightest crown of the world,” answered his grandfather.
“এর অর্থ বিশ্বের সবথেকে উজ্জ্বল মুকুট,” ঠাকুরদা জবাব দিলেন তাঁর।
Then he continued with his tale, “When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her that he would not marry again. He also promised her that he would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.”
তারপরে তিনি তাঁর কাহিনীটি বলা চালিয়ে যান,”মমতাজ যখন তাঁর মৃত্যুশয্যায় ছিলেন, তখন শাহ জাহান তাকে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি আবারও বিয়ে করবেন না। তিনি তাঁর প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন যে তিনি তাঁর সমাধির উপরে সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিসৌধ নির্মাণ করবেন।”
“What is a mausoleum, grandfather?” asked Tarun in surprise.
“স্মৃতিসৌধ কি, ঠাকুরদা?” তরুণকে অবাক করে জিজ্ঞাসা করল।
“Oh! A mausoleum is a building built to house the dead,” said grandfather.
“ওহ! একটি স্মৃতিসৌধ হল মৃতদের আশ্রয় দেওয়ার জন্য নির্মিত একটি অট্টালিকা,” ঠাকুরদা বললেন।
According to legends, Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years.
কিংবদন্তি অনুসারে, শাহ জাহান তার মৃত্যুর পরে এতটাই দু:খিত হয়েছিলেন যে তিনি রাজসভায় দু’বছরের জন্য শোক করার নির্দেশ দিয়েছিলেন।
Later, Shah Jahan started to build the world’s most beautiful monument beside the river Yamuna in memory of his beloved wife.
পরে শাহজাহান তাঁর প্রিয় স্ত্রীর স্মরণে যমুনা নদীর পাশে বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর স্মৃতিস্তম্ভ নির্মাণ শুরু করেন।
It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build the monument.

The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble.
তাজমহল পুরোপুরি সাদা মার্বেলে দিয়ে তৈরি হয়েছিল।
This white marble was brought in from all over Asia.
এই সাদা মার্বেল সমগ্র এশিয়া থেকে আনা হয়েছিল।
When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal.
১৬৬৬ সালে যখন শাহ জাহান মারা যান তখন তাঁর মরদেহ মমতাজ মহলের কবরের পাশে রাখা হয়।
This magnificent monument came to be known as the Taj Mahal.

It is now considered to be one among the seven wonders of the World.

Grandfather paused for a moment. “Well, I have told you quite a lot today. Will this be helpful enough?”
